Listen in as Darren interviews two trailblazing women in the insurance industry. Rosemarie Marshall and Tanja Maffei Chan explain their respective paths to the insurance industry while giving advice to the next generation entering the workforce. Our workforce should be as diverse as the demographics of the businesses and individuals that we represent. As the testimonies of our guests explain, we have made progress in training women for leadership positions and there is still room for improvement.

Tanja Maffei Chan

Drawing on her 25 years of industry experience, Tanja leads the Global Risk Management Team of experts to ensure clients are provided innovative, cost-effective solutions and value-added services domestically and globally. Tanja also collaborates with client executives and insurer partners to develop new national and international businesses. She has extensive M&A and captive experience in a variety of i industries. Prior to joining Hylant, she was a Director of international clients at Willis and Marsh. Tanja conducted her job from Geneva, Switzerland during 2013-15. She handled large and mid-sized clients’ foreign property, liability, captive and environmental programs. Earlier she worked at CNA, Chicago, where she held underwriting and business development positions. She began her career with Swiss Life in 1996 and was stationed in Brussels and Paris. Tanja is a frequent speaker on insurance issues like M&A, compliance, captives, claims management, program structure, and cultural differences. She has also spoken on the state of the market at RIMS regional chapters such as Chicago Risk Forum, Ohio, Pittsburgh and Denver, ALB (Association of Lloyds’ Brokers), TMAC (Treasury Manager’s Association of Chicago), and AFP (Association of Financial Professionals). She currently represents Hylant on the ALB Board and has a passion of promoting inclusion and diversity within the insurance industry.

Rosemarie Marshall

Rosemarie Marshall is Executive Vice President of Learning and Professional Development for Amwins Group. In this role, she is responsible for developing and presenting training materials relating to technical underwriting topics, sales management, and leadership and professional development. Prior to joining the L&D Group in June of 2019, she was the Branch Leader for Amwins Access in Dallas where she was responsible for underwriting small accounts with an emphasis on construction, real estate, and habitational risks. She was also responsible for all aspects of underwriting, sales, and execution of business strategy, and coached a team of 15 commercial, personal lines, and garage underwriters. Rosemarie began her insurance career in 1982 as a customer service representative for a retail agency in Houston. She joined Quirk & Company in 1989 and worked in several different capacities before joining Colemont Insurance Brokers. Colemont was subsequently acquired by Amwins in 2010. Rosemarie has been active in the Texas Surplus Lines Association since 1991 and has served on several committees, including Regulatory Liaison, Education, Membership Recruiting and Advertising as well as the TSLA’s Speakers Bureau. She was a member of the Board of Directors of TSLA from 1994 to 2001 and served as President in 2000. She has taught insurance classes on a wide range of subjects, including Garage Liability, E&O Prevention, Submission Preparation, Boiler & Machinery, Underwriting Essentials and Surplus Lines. She was a member of the curriculum sub-committee of the WSIA Education Committee and served for five years as co-chair of the Education Committee for the legacy AAMGA organization. She was appointed to the Board of Directors of the Surplus Lines Stamping Office of Texas in 2018 and served as Chair of the Board in 2020. Rosemarie holds a B.B.A. in Marketing from The University of Texas at Austin as well as the Accredited Advisor in Insurance and Associate in Risk designations. She and her husband reside in Charlotte, North Carolina with their dog and three cats.
